The aim of the fund was to help women and girls from Canada trying to build a bullneckeder self-esteem and a better constructive self-image than the cast out one which had been running them anxious. This campaign was created by Ogilvy Mather Toronto for the Canadian market sole(prenominal) but it soon became a rage and had a abundant impact non only in Canada but all everyplace the world.Effect The video had a strong effect and it gradually spread much beyond the Canadian Market- the initial tar score market for this message, thanks to the advent of social media especially the use of YouTube here. The audience got to fill out that the advertisement in magazines and on the television is not the real thing. The model girls are made better looking than they actually are but the problem once that women tend to take it as full-strength and thence develop a with low self-esteem as they are not fit to say the true side of it. But this video helped them understand this and thus had a positive impact on their psyche as far as they perceive the beauty as shown to them.Reasons for impactIt fetchs an interesting engage to find out what were the reasons that made this video so popular. Some major reasons that can be though off areEmotional connection For any viral message to be successful, it should be able to connect to the audience on an emotional level. If anyone feels emotional by watching a video, it is bound to supercharge the person to share it with uniform-minded people and feel mature about it and this is the way a viral grows making it infectious. This video directly hit the identity and the self-image of girls and women by exposing to them the reality behind the beauty industriousness and increasing their confidence in their own inner beauty with less emphasis on the impertinent beauty thus helping them create a positive and optimistic self-image and staying away from fake be auties shown by the media.A Sticky and memorable message In addition to being emotional, the message should be hearty in itself and should be strong sufficient to directly reach the memory of the audience. In this video, a message was created telling people that the way they see the beauty is not the real one, its just make up and not the real natural stuff, the reality being something else. Most people did or do not know how fake the beauty industry really is. This is why the message made such a big impact on peoples perception and resulted in remembering who sent the message. For Dove,it helped in creating a station loyalty where audience would remember not only the message but develop a strong brand recall and reputation for Dove.A Novel idea With this video, Dove did something different and extra-ordinary wherein it not only tried to promote its brand but tried to show the audience that I actually cared for them and treasured to show them the real picture. Audience liked the idea in which the perception about the beautiful ad models was changed and the reality was exposed by this video. This novelty in the idea played a huge use of goods and services in the spread of this video by means of online media at such a rapid pace. The Indirect and knotty approachOne of the best things that happen with this video was the trust that it developed among the audience and it happened because of the subtle modal value in which the brand was conveyed along with the message. There was no direct and over-the-face mention of the products or the family or its name. But at the corresponding time, the message behind the message, from Doves perspective, was that the female segment should get the real picture, should aim to be supermodels, instead just try to enjoy their normal beauty and for that they dont need cosmetics or surgeries, all they need a bar of soap, one which cares for them. The continuity in approachOne of the major problems with a viral message is that the enthusiasm generated by the message can easily fall down and thus there should be a disciplined way to counter this. After the immediate spread of this videos and the message, the company realized fast that it needs to keep the fire up and thus it released few other videos with same message fast along with behind the scene coverings and also did everything by means of other ways like interviews, surveys etc. to keep the buzz alive. The likeabilityThe video was very much likeable and it generated a feel good factor among the audience by negating the negative self-image resulting from the wrong perception portrayed by the beauty industry. This was huge and had a big impact on the appeal and attraction of the video.Power of social media Today, Online internet media is a very powerful tool to spread your message across at a very towering speed and across very wide reach. There was a lot of talk about this video on different blogs or through comments and responses in the form of much videos on YouTube that were not only serious ones but were spoofs too like Slob Evolution. Through all this, the power of the video viral grew manifolds and bigger and bigger which created a buzz and thus reached a large audience across the globe. public lecture about the other side of this viral, the audience which was exposed to this video viral inform a positive change in their attitude and perception towards the brand, and not only those, this was also among the people that had only perceive about it and yet not seen it. Thus through this campaign, Dove proved that viral marketing through social media is a very powerful tool if used it the right manner. It can go a long way in changing the attitudes of people towards a brand with good viral marketing, which results in more(prenominal) sales. Not only this, Even without having appeared anywhere through offline means, the video and it effects were discussed by a good number of TV programs, which includes Good Morning America,Th e View, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and news channels such asCNN,NBC, andNews, demo support for the message with an overwhelming majority. It produced double-figure growth in product sales for Dove , and also Unilever reported that its overall sales rose by 5.8%, up from 3.9% the previous year in the duration spare-time activity the release ofEvolution. Also now, Dove has a page on Facebook which mentions their mission as being pull towards helping all women to realize their real beauty potential by creating products that would deliver genuine usefulness to their skin and hair. Sweatshops And The Race To The Bottom Phenomenon Economics Essay
Sweatshops And The die hard To The Bottom Phenomenon Economics Es express(1.) Why do global critics very much cite sweatshops as a prime example of the melt down to the hardlyt joint phenomenon? (2.) In addition, atomic number 18 sweatshops a fetch up on the road to successfulness? (3.) Mean patch, argon sweatshops a common state? (4.) Finally, how can ontogenesis countries slander or escape the stark abuses that oftentimes ac caller-out strange rule investment in outset effortful operations?Global critics contribute that the race to the bottom phenomenon is what happens they say when world markets be opened to cede, unchained pile. In addition without transnational wear down guidelines and regulations, big corporations depart require to place factories and manufacturing plants in countries with the most relaxed environmental and assiduity standards for multi-purpose advantages. atomic number 18 sweatshops a stop on the road to prosperity? Maybe so opinions set off but, records indicate this theory. Human rights, low fee, and less protection for make upers that dominate exporting markets, or attract the mammoth amount of share in foreign direct investment supports the previous theory. Only with the prosperity brought by external pot, globalizations adherents say, can a artless then afford to demand give away working conditions for its workers. This means every prosperous uncouth today one time employed child labor in its economic adolescence that would today be considered sweatshop working conditions. (Radley Balko)Do sweatshops have a common ground? At the end of the day in that location are at least a few commonwealths in which both free traders and anti-sweatshop crusaders can agree. Most free trade advocates agree, for example that benefiting from slave labor is no break up than theft. Sweatshop workers are often the envy of their communities they make much money than the farmhands or beggars. The pigment to building prosperity is superior, and if workers dont have the option to quit, or to sequester a job with a factory across town whirl split up wages, the free in free trade is a misnomer, and the benefits of globalization are tainted. (Radley, Balko)How can maturation countries minimize or escape the dangerous abuses that often accompany foreign direct investment in low labor-intensive operations? The list of dangers and difficulties linked to foreign direct investor and associated subcontractor operations in low -skill, labor-intensive operations is quite long but, perhaps reasonably surprisingly, so is the list of possible benefits and opportunities.(Theodore H. Moran)ANALYSIS PART 1 (Perception of the race to the bottom phenomenon)Sweatshops are an ongoing problem throughout the global economy, peculiarly in the ontogenesis countries. There is more than 90% of child labor and sweatshop market employed in the rural areas of Asia and Africa. Even though there are a lot of developed co untries that oppose child labor and sweatshops because of moral and ethical reason. They feel that the companies are taking advantage of the developing countries and exploiting their children in force(p) to make a profit. However, the developed countries have to understand the fond and economic cost, the standard living conditions, and having a good grasp of what commonwealth living in these developing countries might go through. Sweatshops might be the answer and not the problem in developing a country.Furthermore, the immensity of having sweatshops is that it automatically creates jobs for the rural areas of these developing countries. These new jobs can pay up to ii or three times as much of borderline wage, which gives the people more money to spend and this serves develop the country because the average income outrank is rising. The developing countries will say that it is morally and ethically pervert for companies to move their business to rural and developing countrie s, because they are not universe paid as much as developed countries. In addition, they are making their employees work 84-105 hours a week compared to the United States traditional 40 hours, and sometimes the salary is 60% 80% lower than a company will pay in the United States. average to add, sweatshops are viewed as over working their employees causing and creating hazardous and unhealthy working conditions. How would tone be in developing countries without sweatshops? Since sweatshops create new jobs and new prospect for the people in these rural areas, without the sweatshops the new jobs and opportunity would be gone. This will lead to young women and men prostituting themselves just to make money to survive. Also, starvation will become a huge factor in the developing countries, because without any jobs opportunity for an unskilled worker becomes narrow, without an education.People will have limited choices, for example possibly starving or stealing which overtime will l ead to additive violence, and eventually raise the crime rate because people have to survive. as yet, since sweatshops are in a rural area it eases monitor the crime rates, starvation, and increases the dream of education because families are given opportunity to become more skilled on board an ample income, paving a new way for the next generation. Therefore, as we learned in our world(prenominal)ist Business class, some of the developed countries can be bias and insincere because developed countries previously endorsed a sweatshop opportunity to gain existence and mightiness in the market, examples are South Korea, and Taiwan. More importantly a mass of developing countries will embrace this vicious cycle for exposure, skill, and hands on awareness of a volatile market.Analysis go against II Sweatshops and successfulnessSweatshops are good for globalization and prosperity because of comparative advantages in the market, which help the developing countries grow in the long r un. Sweatshops will give developing people in rural areas a set of skills that will help them to compete in the International market. Companies like Nike and Wal-Mart help develop these countries by giving them the opportunity to learn how to do things those consumers and companies in develop countries take for granted. In return the skills sets learned will manufacture undeveloped countries, firearm increasing competitiveness and assembling products cheaper but still efficient, will mesh a higher demand and raise the GDP of undeveloped countries. The mentation of stability supports prosperity which is rare globally, so if opportunity renders freedom of choice for developing countries the debate becomes simple and survival is usually submitted.Analysis one-third Are Sweatshops common ground?Common ground is usually efficacious if the government in the host country is held accountable in the international community. Therefore the fundamental disagreement about sweatshops revolves debate about fairness. westerly companies benefit from cheap labor in the developing world sweatshop activists say western corporations can afford to pay artificial living wages and that anything less reeks exploitation.Further arguments include corporate governments penalizing the western companies internally if better working conditions arent offered to the developed countries or consumers refraining from purchasing products.Common ground becomes a factor, globalist say if that happens western corporations have no incentive to invest in the third world in the first place. Developing countries have two choices when negotiating common ground, (1) embrace foreign investment, (2) demand wages not comparative to what their national labor market would naturally have. In most cases, the grade that delivers prosperity (1) or the track that produces continued poverty (2) will land clues to the debate and the winning verdict.Analysis IV. FDI in low labor-intensive operationsGlobal mar kets gain their questionable state of regimen through rules that are stated in trade agreements, labor laws, and factors that give constructions on gender. once you understand markets as institutions it will allow you to link the globalization of the trim industry to US foreign policies. Major players within in the US textile and apparel industries seem to hold different trade strategies in store for use.The textile industry benefits from rule-of-origin protections, the apparel industry benefits from free trade without restrictions. Large-scale retailers became key political players. Unions opposed free-trade arrangements with developing countries that they believe surrogate a race to the bottom type of mentality. Overall the previous development about trade and apparel just emphasizes the importance of growth and index in the free trade market which elaborates capitalism and the issues of transparency simultaneously. In transition, developing countries do have a strategy for att racting investors to low-wage export industries to induce special export processing zones or free trade zones. Nevertheless the objective of establishing EPZs and FTZs is to provide foreign investors and their subcontractors with freedom duties on the capital equipment and components while exempting many governments from various labor regulations in the zones, including the organization of labor unions. alien Direct Investment in low wage, low-skill host countries has two sides misadventure and success. Positive is that when FDI is implemented in undeveloped rural areas potential benefits of a new life are given such as jobs, skills, agenda, choices, opportunities, etc.Negative outcomes of FDI is that deception and bondage whitethorn be used to retain the people from leaving their jobs in extreme situations recruiters and agents set up networks in which family members arrange to pay off loans my selling their children into contract labor. In addition, workers may receive no bene fits such as social security alongside workers being divestd promotion and benefits of seniority.CONCLUSIONAnalysis Part IThe race to the bottom phenomenon can be viewed as an advantage or disadvantage. Most global critics tend to view corporations and retailers taking credit for offering jobs and services to a weaker opponent, but not using internal ethical motive as a navigator to promote a safer healthier work environment.Nevertheless youre able to see the pros and the cons but general my opinion clear states that globalization and capitalism at the bottom can be jolty but stability equates to balance which means development needs more pros than cons overall but we all start from an infant stage to adolescence enthusiastic for maturity and experience.Analysis Part IIAre sweatshops a stop to the road to prosperity? Yes I feel that prosperity is not just tangible riches that a person or country endures, but the intangibles that are benefited from prosperity are much greater. S o the resolution is to sweatshops overall being prosperous is government morality meaning that leadership starts from supra and trickles down. To be prosperous means sacrifice, discipline, and patience, but these qualities define moral ethics and the sweatshop or the corporate retailer cant establish a socialisation that has to come from the developing country internally.Analysis Part IIIAre sweatshops common ground? This question brings joy to me because this interrogative statement revolves well-nigh the debater and their view. However I consider myself a debater so let me elaborate yes and my reasons why are this history teaches you about the bygone meaning you may have or not endured historical moments or events during the time line of your life which remotely if successful allow you and your family comfort.Just to add if youve never endured something but wanted more how can you deprive a choice of opportunity to another person or country without bearing the conditions or lif estyle they represent. So my inclination of common ground is the specimen of experience and the verdict well that would be the individuals choice.Analysis Part IVHow can developing countries minimize or escape the dangerous abuses that often accompany foreign direct investment in low labor-intensive operations? FDI are benefits of investors that see potential from an undeveloped country starting with lack of opportunity, few choices, skill, education, health care, and other fundamentals of a higher standard living. In addition, there are disadvantages of countries with FDI such as benefits, working conditions, employee treatment. But to minimize or escape the dangerous abuses a host country must hold the government accountable and the standards that they allow corporations to work under and the ethics and treatment that follows.Labor unions and police observe is a start because that enforces accountability which leads to other interest groups in the future day and set a precedence of standards throughout internally which will bung the external zone/developed countries or corporate retailers. Globalization and trade derived from conditions such as sweatshops, slavery, bondage, and to enhance undeveloped countries means upgrade the conditions and the sound environment.

The information state seems to show Lincolns belief that he could just deliver a basic message and with his words were fully understood. It is an utilization of a man who took his beliefs that the government should be for all the people. On review of this authors work I can definitely agree with his financial logical argument as follows In his usual fashion he stated his proposition so clearly and with such finality that there is no escape from his meaning. This actually shows the fact that Lincoln simply told it how it was, with no swagger or exaggeration. The dead on target meaning behind The Democracy of Abraham Lincoln supports the statement that as time change, the literature of that time changes to reflect the views of society. Introducing Unitarian Universalism. Interfaith Conference. Washburn University. Yager Stadium, Topeka, Kansas. October, 11, 2003. Web. 3 March 2011. Reverend David E. Grimm is a Unitarian Universalist minister, as was Emerson. The Unitarian Universalists have held Ralph Waldo Emerson in high regard for a great many years. Some of their principals come directly from the work of Emerson, and others were influenced by it. whizz of their principals is the free and responsible search for truth and meaning. Reverend Grimm gave a speech on Unitarian Universalism, wh ere he introduced the faith at an interfaith conference. In this speech, he gave a sketch overview of Emerson, and stated that the desirable state of affairs where one could actually read the clean-living law directly for oneself was called self-reliance by a young Unitarian minister named Ralph Waldo Emerson. Grimm interprets the Essay by Emerson to mean that one should learn to institutionalise the power deep down yourself to discern the higher law, to know whats right. This idea that a person could discern right from wrong without the guidance of the bible was not necessarily a new idea, but was not put out in the open so eloquently until Emerson wrote Self Reliance. Emerson was a Unitarian minister, but he left the church to pursue a purport of writing. His writing comfort reflected his Unitarian beliefs, and in todays time, they are not lone(prenominal) Unitarian, but more Unitarian Universalist, which only came to be by and bywards a merging of the both religions. The implications from the in suspirationt of Emerson brought an understanding of moral norms to Unitarianism. Grim States later on all, in the light of self-reliance, the Bible was seen for what it was second-hand religion, a religion handed down from the past to us, from somebody elses original reading of the moral law bulky ago. (Grimm 15)Grim concludes that Self reliance unseated the hold of not only the Bible, but the sacred texts of other religions as well. All were someone elses interpretation of the moral law. It was the act of the interpretation that Emerson explained that a person could do for themselves. Grimm claims that Self Reliance put a truth out for people to considerAnd so, over time, not just the Bible, but sacred texts from all of the worlds religions, came to be reward among us Unitarian Universalists as expressions of this universal human attempt to know what is right, and to do it. (Grimm 15)Emerson said Whoso would be a man, must be a non-conformist. (Emerso n 7) meaning not to revolt against the system of man, but to question it, and gain friendship that it holds. To accept answers on the basis of anothers opinion was trust not put well. The major religions relied on their bible to relay right and wrong. Emerson attempts to tell the people that they already know right from wrong, and they only need to pull these ethical motive from within. The work of Self Reliance coincides with the literary periods of Romanticism and of the Transcendentalists. This was a time of discovery and appreciation for nature. It was an enlightenment of the people, yet a grim realisation by Emerson that dependence on societys demands and behaving correctly was becoming a major part of the human existence. Emerson says that men are overly concerned with reputations and the opinion of others so much so that they can no longer be genuine, and instead become hypocritical and cynical. Emerson further states that Society Never Advances. (Emerson 45) For every adva ncement, something is taken away. Emerson details this in a large selectionThe civilized man has built a coach, but has lost the use of his feet. He is supported on crutches, but lacks so much support of the muscle. He has got a fine Geneva watch, but he has lost the cleverness to tell the hour by the sun. A Greenwich nautical almanac he has, and so being sure of the information when he wants it, the man in the street does not know a star in the sky. The solstice he does not observe the equinox he knows as little and the whole bright calendar of the year is without a dial in his mind. His notebooks muck up his memory his libraries overload his wit the insurance-office increases the number of accidents and it may be a question whether machinery does not encumber whether we have not lost by refinement some energy, by a Christianity entrenched in establishments and forms some vigor of wild virtue. For every stoic was a stoic but in Christendom where is the Christian? (Emerson 46)Thes e statements prove that throughout history, the views of civility have changed, and that the comprehension of such has changed with political correctness thus ever-changing cultural rules. Emersons Self Reliance shows that civilized society is indeed flawed, and is inherently tainted with hypocrisy.Annotated Bibliography of The Adventures of huckleberry Finn by Mark distich buckle under, William E. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Masterplots, quadth Edition (2010) 1-4. Literary Reference Center. EBSCO. Web. 10 Mar. 2011.Mark Twain gave the world The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in 1876. It was a sequel to The Adventures of tom turkey Sawyer. Twain opens this young by explaining to the reader that he is being true to the characters of the book by keeping their regional dialects. According to William E. divide, in his literary criticism titled Adventures of Huckleberry Finn print in Masterplots, statesThe skill with which Twain elevates the dialect of an unwitting village boy to the highest levels of rime established the spoken American mother tongue as a literary language and earned for Twain the reputation, announced for him by Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and many others, as the father of the modern American invigorated. (Grant 13) paren thesis from the dialect of the characters, Twain manages to bring forth an uncanny goodness in most of the characters. Twain successfully depicts the world the characters live in as volatile and ever changing. Every character is in some manikin of conflict.Themes of the novel are Society in itself is hypocritical, Freedom, Slavery, Search for a contract Figure, the common man versus the world (or society) and the brotherhood of man. According to Grant, Twain believed human beings to be innately good though increasingly corrupted by affectionate influences that replace their intuitive sense of right and wrong. (Grant 14)The character of Huck battles with his conscience many times in trying to decide what would be the right thing to do. He fakes his death in set to write himself, yet, feels it could be the reason his father died. Huck struggles with Jims status as a slave and if he should turn him in or not. Huck lastly decides to go to Hell and maintain his decision to break what is considered morally and lawfully wrong, and not turn Jim in in fact, he protects Jim at every turn. Edwards feels that Twain compellingly establishes the irony that Hucks sin against the social establishment affirms the best that is attainable in the individual.Within the novel, references are made to code of Honor with the Shepherdson boys, who live under the law of vendetta against the Grangerfords. There are in addition many references to civilize. The widow Douglass attempts to Civilize Huck, making him wear fancies on Sundays and act halal and sit up straight. She wanted to teach him religion, yet she ironically holds slaves. She plain does not hold herself to what charge she feels is not wh olly right she get outing not have her slaves sold to anyone else because she cares for them very well and she would not have them sent to someone who would treat them as good as she.Grant is of the opinion that slavery provides Twain his largest metaphor for both social chains and institutionalized injustice and inhumanity. He further feels that the novel is not an anti-slavery novel per say, but rather than attacking an institution already legally dead, Twain uses the idea of slavery as a metaphor for all social bondage and injustice. (Grant 15) The novel was published nearly thirteen years after the end of the civil war, yet opinions and perceptions on race were not yet settled. Both Huck and Jim were literally and in perceptual slavery to the Widow Douglass. They both flee to begin a new life in a slave free state, yet cast off headed south on the Mississippi. Grant offered insight to the direction of the voltaic pile as It is just about irrelevant that Twain has Huck and J im running deeper into the southwestward rather than pairing toward free soil. Freedom exists neither in the North nor in the South but in the ideal and idyllic world of the raft and river. (Grant 15)The raft and the River both play catalyst to the heart of the relationship of Huck and Jim. The two see themselves fleeing the same situations, in their minds. Both take risks for one another, and there are consequences of being caught for both Huck and Jim. Huck is sensed as an abolitionist, punishable by death. Jim is seen as the murderer of Huck, punishable by death. art object each has their life on the line for the other, they sincerely protect each another, almost as father and son. They make stops along the river for supplies and rest, each stop bringing an adventure that sends them fleeing once again for the sanctuary of their raft. Grant considers It is onshore that Huck encounters the worst excesses of which the damned human race is capable, but with each return to the raf t comes a renewal of spiritual bank and idealism. Grant 16)William E. Grants essay enforces the idea of Hypocrisy in Civilized Society. The novel brings situations of Slavery, Civility, rules and wrongs that many people of the 19th one C simply did not want to hear about, speak of, or deal with. They would have to turn the mirror inward and have a good look at themselves, because most people simply followed the cultural rules, and did not speak out til now if they thought something was wrong. Grant ends his essay of criticism of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with a most well written statementThrough the adventures of an escaped slave and a gambol boy, both representatives of the ignorant and lowly of the earth, Twain affirms that true humanity is found in humans rather than institutions. (Grant 14)While this novel continually takes a beating for its content, the underlying moral truths that are exposed can still be applied to current times, with only a slight twist. It is l iterature such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that should remain as originally written, unedited, in order to maintain the integrity with which it was intended.Annotated Bibliography of The avenue Not Taken by Robert rimeGrimes, Linda Sue. Robert Frosts Tricky Poem. synopsis of The highway Not Taken. Suite101.com Media Inc., 14 Apr. 2008. Web. 9 Mar. 2011. .The Road Not Taken was written by Robert Frost. This poem characterizes an assertion of individualism. In Robert Frosts Tricky Poem, an analysis by Linda Sue Grimes, she states that Frost claims this poem was about his friend Edward Thomas. They Frost and Thomas would periodically go on walks in the woods near London. While they would be enjoying their walk they would come across two distinguishable roads to take. After choosing one road, rumor has it Thomas would always investigate what was down the other road.According to Grimes in Robert Frosts Tricky Poem, the number one stanza is describing the situation, which was the predicament of choosing one road over the other. The second stanza keys the road he decides to take. Because it was grassy and wanted wear he takes the road that is less traveled on, even though he stated that they were and were not exactly the same. The third stanza continuities to describe the roads, he notices the difference between the two. Such as the leaves were freshly move and both had not been walked on. The forth stanza has tricky words, I shall be verbalise this with a sigh, the word this can be interpreted as a relief or regret in the decision of the road he takes. (Frost 16) Different interpretations can be identified after reading The Road Not Taken, such as views upon friendship or his future behind the road he has taken and his experiences because of his survival of the fittest. In the beginning of the 20th century there was a strong focus on individuality and nature, as it offered an escape from focus of World War I. Various processes in industrialism w ere fetching shape in the country and changing views of society. Frosts poetry served as a system check pricker to naive realism from the chaos of the times. As Grimes saysIn this poem, it is key to be careful with the time frame. When the speaker says he exit be reporting sometime in the future how his road choice turned out, he clearly states that he cannot assign meaning to sigh and difference yet, because he cannot know how his choice will affect his future, until after he has lived it. Virginia Commonwealth University. 1995. Web. March 11, 2011. Wynn Yarboroughs paper, titled Readings of Thoreaus Resistance to Civil Government, is an overview of Thoreaus Resistance to Civil Government, which is sometimes simply called Civil Disobedience, is based on a variety of sources from the 1920s thr ough the 1970s. In the early paragraphs, Mr. Yarborough goes through the stages of Thoreaus life and different ways in which his work was perceived through the years. The remainder of the paper consists primarily of variety of different opinions and how each of them plays a part in certain time periods. The overall view of the references used by Mr. Yarborough is that Thoreau was a man with a great competency to justify his beliefs. Each of the views expressed by him seems to be validated by others in the years to come.It is my belief that Mr. Yarborough was very informative with this paper. It was an overview complied from many sources over an extended period of time. Each of the critics shows a side of Thoreau and they use his beliefs to back up their choices. The government is reflected in different ways during each of the reviews that Mr. Yarborough states. I feel that each of the critics of Thoreau may believe that his ways were not justify and that perhaps he was not rational . Critics such as Vivas, Parrington and MacKayne all show a variety of beliefs which may be justified by critiquing Thoreau. One example in Mr. Yarboroughs research that speaks to the significance of Thoreaus writings is In the 1960s, Thoreau became not only relevant but almost a popular icon. The statement that as time changes the literature of that time changes to reflect the views of society is shown correct with this review and how Thoreaus work is used to further many causes. Each time period from the 1920s through the 1970s has shown that the government had ever changing values. While time continues to change literature, time changes to reflect the views of society. Hypocrisy will always be a part of the government as it was so many years ago and it continues today. It is not the intention of the people gnarled but it is how society seems to function as a whole.Annotated Bibliography of potful and blade by Carl SandburgNiven, Penelope. Carl (August) Sandburg. American Poets, 1880-1945 Third Series. Ed. Peter Quartermain. Detroit Gale Research, 1987. Dictionary of Literary Biography Vol. 54. Literature Resource Center. Web. 14 Mar. 2011.Penelope Nivens Critical essay, titled Carl (August) Sandburg, offers a look at the life and work of Carl Sandberg, an American Poet. Niven opens with a brief biographical essay, highlighting that Sandburg came from humble beginnings as the child of immigrants from Sweden. His parents met after they arrived in the United States, in Illinois. They were in search of a share of American democracy and prosperity. (Niven 4) His father was a hard doer, being employed by the railroad yard as a blacksmith.Sandburg was born in 1878, and was raised(a) speaking both English and Swedish. According to Niven, Carl Sandberg was eager to assimilate into American Culture and Society at a very early age. When he was in grade school, he changed his name from a Swedish seem Carl to a more American Sounding Charles. (Niven 4) There were ma ny children in the Sandburg household, and after the deaths of two of the children, in 1892, Charles was forced to leave school to garter with the familys needed income. In 1897, Sandburg left his family, at the age of eighteen, and toured the United States on the rails as a hobo. He gained knowledge of different areas, and worked spotty jobs with the local working physical body people to get a piffling bit of money that helped him from one place to another. His desire to travel was immense, and he eventually volunteered for service in the Spanish American War in 1898. (Niven 6)His status as a veteran allowed him to attend college at no cost. He did attend, but did not excel, and eventually left. Sandburg was more interested with people and the landscape than he was with fitting schooling. Sandberg began to write about the American people being candid and rugged, speaking in individual free-verse style which spoke clearly, directly, and often crudely to the audience which was a like his subject. (Niven 10)He became an investigative reporter for the Chicago Daily News he further developed lusty social concerns. Nivens statesHe covered war, racial strife, lynchings, mob violence, and the inequities of the industrial society, such as child labor, and disease and injury induced in the workplace. These concerns were transmuted into poetry.Sandberg published several books of poetry, the first being Chicago Poems, that gave realistic views from the working class, children, and the self-contradictory fate of the vulnerable and struggling human victims of war, progress, business. The following gaudiness of poetry was titled stinkpot and Steel (1920), which focused on the harsh reality of the times. The volume vividly depicts the daily toil of the working man and woman, the people who must sing or die. Within the volume, a poem also titled Smoke and Steel, Sandburg uses Smoke from steel mills, spring fields, and autumn leaves as metaphors for the pedigree of a m an. He considers them a life force, but also that which happens the people commonality. The poem details the struggle of the common man.Nivens finds that the Volume as a collection is uneven and concludes with contradictory critical views. She further states that other critics have labeled Sandburg as having no sense of the past or vision of the future. Some critics, however, did find that this son of Swedish immigrants was particularly suitable to write about the incomplete, but urgent and hopeful American democracy and that Sandberg allows others to see our national life in the largeits beauty and glory, its baseness and shame. This expression by Penelope Nivens offers a great look at the life and times of Carl Sandberg, and does relate his work, as a whole, to spotlighting the hypocrisy of American Society, within the time period that it is written, the 1920s, in the height of the Industrial Revolution. Within the poem, Smoke and Steel, the focus is on the life occupation of all the people and what the people must do and conform to in order to make society work, and work for each of them. Even those who wish to escape the hypocrisy of civilized society and do something else will eventually return because of the jobs provided by perseverance. The anthem learned by the steel is Do this or go hungry. (Sandburg 104, 105) Nivens concludes Yet as the spokesman for the great human family, Carl Sandburg, biographer, historian, troubadour, and poet, speaks to any period, any place.Annotated Bibliography of Smoke and Steel by Carl SandburgYannella, Philip. Web. 14 Mar. 2011. http//books.google.com/books?id=9T9h_xAdxGwCprintsec=frontcoverv=onepage qf=falsePhillip Yannella has written immense satisfying analyzing the poetry and works of Carl Sandburg, a poet of the early 20th century. In his book titled, The Other Carl Sandburg, Yanella looks at several of the books that Sandburg wrote, and att empts to shed light onto each volume, and give a bit of a representation to some of the more important individual poems contained within the volumes. The volume, Smoke and Steel, comprised many poems, and was the second book for Carl Sandburg. The first book reflected positively on the working class, and its eventual happiness to be active and productive. The second book, Smoke and Steel, has no heroic working class about to rise up to take its just due, no models of proper working class behavior, no noble immigrant workers, no happy self-reliant humanistic workers, workers who danced and sang in spite of their lowness. (Yannella 144) Instead, with Smoke and Steel, Sandburg portrayed the worker as an angry and violent soul, and who harbored hostility against society. The worker was invisible. The time when the work was written, the 1920s, is important because the Race Riots had just happened, and there was a steel divergence that caused workers to decline in numbers, the union to str ike, and allowed technology to take many a workers job.The poem titled Smoke and Steel is the longest in the volume of the same name. It contains some of the most intense, suggestive language he ever wrote. (Yanella 145) Sandburg metaphorically compares the smoke to the blood of man. He says that there is smoke in the mills, in the fields, in the burning leaves, and this smoke is from the work done by the common man. This man puts so much of himself into the task that the smoke becomes his blood and without it he cannot sustain, as the work cannot sustain without the worker. Smoke into blood, and blood into steel. They make the steel with men.The work of Sandburg and the Analysis by Phillip Yannella prove the thesis that society is hypocritical in itself, by requiring things to be made through industry to support it, yet it is the man who works in industry, and in doing so, suffers. The poem, Smoke and Steel, has powerful language that exposes the fact that steel is part of our ever yday life, and it travel into the everyday existence of every person. What is of the person and family who worked so hard and sometimes gave their life to give these often meaningless things to society? Sandburg states Smoke and blood is the mix of steel connecting the product with what has gone into making it. (Sandburg 45) He continues, as if every other person in the country is named Steve. Steve and the rest of us end on the same stars we all wear a hat in hell together, in hell or heaven. (Sandburg 71) Sandburg touches on the environmental aspect as the byproduct of the steel that is made, slag, is washed out by fire and jumper cable, and states Forever the slag gets washed in fire and wind because slag will contaminate wherever it lies forever. Sandberg shows that in our time or progress, we find need for steel and other industry, for our planes, our warships, and our rails. Sandburg humanizes the workers as brothers, and extends their reach as smoke from all industry to rea ch every American.Annotated Bibliography of I have a Dream by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Dlugan, Andrew. Good business and organizations must determine the hazards associated with the operations to protect their employees from being injured. The role of organizations in the improveme nt of safety and occupational health is through the careful preparation of their strategies in order to address and meet their obligations to make necessary risk assessments, place measures necessary for the health and safety of employees. The recommendations that organizations are making should be achieve on an action plan for the control or elimination of health and safety risks. There are specific things to consider when you want organizations to be responsible.Organizations should commission, organize and coordinate the risk assessment procedures among their employees. This is to ensure that the needs of those who are on the look for a safer workplace and healthy occupational environment. In order to ensure the absence of accidents among employees, they should demonstrate in their competency to show off their abilities, understand general police squad effort. It would not be too difficult to address these types of safety concerns.Organizations must ensure the proper coordination between assessors and the involvement of management and encouraged the workforce participation. Risk assessments must be done to properly address the health needs of employees. The monitoring of stoppage and protective measures must be maintained. The essence of occupational health and safety is through the integrative model of management in the workplace. It must use a participatory problem solving forward motion in order to identify the promptly address the myriad of issues which are associated with disease prevention, health promotion, occupational hazard reduction and safety. The improvements of organizational and human resource management are ensured through the participation of both the employers and the workers themselves.Review approaches to the management of regeneration in healthcare settings.Individuals can define transition in various ways. The dynamic and changing demographics as well as the economics of the growing multicultural levels and the disparities in the he alth sector of the people who are from a myriad of mixture in terms of cultural background. The challenging versatile workforce has been one of the obstacles by which health care providers and institutions must address as a priority. However, health care professionals must then corroborate that the solutions on cultural diversity must go beyond the practices, customs, values and beliefs.Diversity can be defined in a broader experience with multiple dimensions. This includes the discussions on ethnic, racial and gender identities. The factors of generation, sexual orientation, physical ability, religion, family ,social status, political beliefs, professional background and a myriad of individual inclinations and affiliations. Moreover, each individual member of the healthcare team up is unique. They have distinct personalities and temperaments which adds to the diversity of the health care settings.Williams and OReilly has reviewed 40 years of research on this topic. They have reason out thatThe consistent social categorization and attraction/similarity theories, the prevalence of the evidence has suggested that the diversity is most likely to impede the functioning of the group. This conclusion was shared in various focus groups on different venues. (Williams, K. Y., and C. A. OReilly III, 1998).The proponents of homogenisation on the healthcare setting can impact the team performance. Diversity must highlight the substance of competence in culture and diversified management skills in order to bring out performances of the demographically diverse health care team. (Williams, K. Y., and C. A. OReilly III, 1998).According to Williams and OReilly (1998) and Maznevski (1994) , when there is proper leverage , health care diversity can really improve the performance of a group. (Maznevski, M. L, 1994)According to Oetzel (1998 2001) the significance of group interdependence as well as the strong group process skills in the performance of demographically divers e groups. (Oetzel, J. G. 1998)Pelled, Eisenhardt, and Xin (1999) cited that those demographically diverse teams can work together over time the unrestrained conflict can triggered by interpersonal clashes lessened. (Pelled, L., K. Eisenhardt, and K. Xin. 1999)A study conducted on the nursing care team performance conducted by Dreachslin, Hunt, and Sprainer (1999 2000) cited that the leadership style was the key to reduce the wound up conflict which is oftentimes present in demographically diverse groups. Team leaders of nurses who have encourages the participated in the discussions about the group of identities and race. Those nurse team leaders who can validate the various perspectives were successful in the defused negative emotional distraught. (Dreachslin, J., P. Hunt, and E. Sprainer. 1999)According to Hopkins, Hopkins, and Mallette (2001), the strategic diversity management was strongly associated with well grounded organizational commitment not only among leaders and manage rs of the same ethnicity and race but among those white male managers. (Hopkins, W. E., S. Hopkins, and P. Mallette, 2001)There is an urgent need to manage diversity in health care settings. Otherwise, the diversity in the demographics can substitute the functioning of the team thereby affecting their efficiency in the delivery of health care to their patients. A common denominator among groups must be place due to the fact that similarity can give the team members the luck to deal with others.Health care leaders should invest in the professional development of their employees to help them manage their differences as individuals. There are a lot of elements to consider in order to improve the organizational and team decision approaches. The group-process and the enculturation of conflict -management skills, understanding of cultural difference, self awareness and the ability to validate their efforts towards the management of diversity. The effective approach to diversity in health care settings must seek balance between customization and homogenization in order to fully explore the benefits and the lessen cots of increasingly diverse workforce and patient population. It was cited by Kochan and colleagues (2003) on how important it is to manage diversity immediately.Another approach to diverse health care settings is to utilize a research based cultural competence and diversity assessment tool. This can be used as baseline data for evaluation of the performance of diversified health care team.Compare organisational approaches to ensuring positive policies of work place diversity.Diversity in the cultural background of health care professionals can be an issue in the workplace. This will require people from various cultural and beliefs background to work together. The broader definition of diversity is through the negative and positive organizational approaches to this type of workplace related issue.Chronic conflicts can result from every health care setting and workplace. A lot of health care organizations may have examined the culture in conflict. In order to discover these streams of conflicts may come from the multi-layered complex systems. This is to improve their own capacity for prevention of conflict, settlement, resolution and management.Diversity is often the subject of ground and debate. This is one of the negative side of diversity. The term instills the political meaning of diversity. Not all members of an organization value diversity. As a rule, there are a lot of people who are most comfortable with themselves. accenting diversity this may undermine the comfort level. Diversity itself can cause various approached to practices and long lasting problems. There are individuals in a myriad of organizations which may cause trouble. Moreover, there are persons who have strong prejudice against a specific group that would rapidly change the demographics of the various members of the workforce which can impose as threat to dive rsity. One approach to diversity in health care setting can mirror the key business issues. It must include the implementation and development of a strategic plan which aims for the goals of diversity. The creation of specific methods to attain the goals and the identification of the resources can measure the impact of diversity in the organization. The cornerstones of strategic planning to diversity may include the proper education of associates regarding the issues of diversity to the increased awareness and ability to manage the relationships among health care staff, patients and clients.Organizations must learn on how to properly and effectively integrate diversity into the policies and practices of the health care organization. This is to help the staff in inculcating the significance of the goals towards diversity. The development of accountability among the organizations can halt the diversity in all levels of the healthcare sector.Diversity management is a type of human resou rce management approach which has emerged in the United States which aims to value diversity. The diversity management of the Scandinavian Model has emerged from the critiques of the US model. trivial research has been conducted on how to manage diversity which is enacted for health care organization. healthcare instituti

Pricing Options using Binomial and Trinomial Methods
determine Options using binominal and Trinomial MethodsPublished in the 1970s, the slow-Scholes-Merton standard gived an entirely new definition for the m unitytary natural selection mart, half a century later the binomial tree excerption determine smudge was make, and that is the true key that eachows the excerpt market to be generalized to the world. ground upon the Binomial poser, the Trinomial excerption pricing toughie was build to reduce realizable errors and persons thus expected it to be a better approach. Still how e rattlingwheremuch better is the Trinomial ensample, and is it worth spending the quantify on calculations? These impart be the key affinitys provided in this talk. The comparisons be al-Qaidad upon com portioner calculating era utilizationd, and approximation error. An illustrative example is enforced to build the data base for further comparison of the matchnce speed of these devil models. All the value ar encryptd using t he Matlab program and Casio calculators in order to provide examples of the assumption that the Trinomial resource pricing model is a better model in reducing the approximation error, precisely takes much foresighteder than the Binomial tree model to get the results.Chapter 1 introductionThe emergence of financial derivatives in the 1970s marked a highly signifi bathroomt and provoke event in the history of finance. Options occupation began in the United States and European markets in the late eighteenth century, and all everywhere the last 20 years, alternatives vie a key role in all financial derivatives. The filling legal injury was an old question for the financial world. Back in the 1900s Louis Bachelier published his academic dissertation Thorie de la speculation (Theory of Speculation), which became known by the public as the milestone of modern finance. The random walk theory, which built a random model of the memory board scathes changing pattern and how it foll ows in the stockpile market, was first use in his paper. In 1964, Paul Samuelson (Nobel hold dear in Economic Science winner) revised L.Bacheliers model, and instead of the stock charge he used stock returns to eliminate the negative figures which might get along in L.Bacheliers model. Based upon this new model P.Samuelson also studied the cry Option pricing problem, and built a pricing comparability for it. Although the equation was quite a beauty to watch, it could non be used in real world dealings since two of the main(prenominal) factors depended upon the investors personal predilection.Futures and alternatives ar traded actively on many put backs throughout the world. Before any received systematization models of the election had been created it was impossible for tribe to evaluate any soma of option scathe in a common way. Any approximations of the hurt based traders personal experience would well likely result in mistakes. The only method to maximize the go od of the option price would be to build a standard and systematization model and find the quantification of the option trading. This was an important event in the financial world at that time. Since the sudden of option trading, and especially of securities options trade, researchers have been busy in the studies of options pricing. In 1973, Fischer sour and Myron Scholes published The Pricing of Options and Corpo site Liabilities at the University of Chicago, where they presented the famous Black-Scholes model for options pricing (B-S model for neat). They derived a incomplete differential equation, which governs the price of the option over time. Once it has been published, the B-S model received strong responses and gained a breakthrough in this field. While some researchers conducted thorough tests on the models accuracy, many others presented various opinions on the problems in the model and expanded on them for the purposes of improvement and extension. Because of this glar y partial differential equation and all of the contri preciselyion that it had created, M.Scholes and R.Merton (F.Black was deceased) both won the Nobel gelt for Economics. In 1979, Cox, Ross and Rubinstein published a paper called Option Pricing A Simplified Approach, and in a simple manner obtained the pricing radiation pattern using the Binomial model, which was applied widely. This is the event that really changed the option trading market because it do option trading more(prenominal) transpargonnt to intimately traders, and advanced the improvement of the market. During the option, the trading market highly-developed more and more different sorts of option models, with the most famous and widely used models beingness the European option and Ameri merchant ship option. As these two options were named, they were mainly applied in Europe and America and the main difference between the two options is when the option allow be fulfilled (I provide fully formulate this at a la ter degree). The Binomial option pricing model is essentially a Binomial Tree which shows possible values that an vestigial asset or stock initial stock price can take, and the resulting value of the option price at each soulfulness stage of the asset. The main idea of the tree is constructed by assuming that the stock can only go up or down by a factor related to the length of time period, and capriciousness of the stock. Trinomial model was developed by Prelim Boyle in 1986 it is an adjusted and improved version of the Binomial Tree. Instead of assuming the stock can only go up or down, the Trinomial Tree allows a third choicethe stock be constant.Comp atomic number 18d to the Binomial and Trinomial tree model, the Black-Scholes model is a more mathematical and speculative modelV = SN (d1) N (d2) (Will be excuseed at later stage)Although the binomial option pricing model and trinomial tree values converge on the Black-Scholes formula value as the number of time go increases . With these two simplified methods the option pricing theory and option market became more generalized and easier for the public. With the time flows, the option market began to prevail all over the world, and therefore more and more specific different images of options were created to accommodate to the dispa aim country. In this dissertation I will mainly hold and present the relation and difference between the Black-Scholes model, the Binomial Option Pricing model and the Trinomial Tree model, in both a mathematical and financial way.Chapter 1 This chapter is mainly about the Black-Scholes models differential equation, including every valuable consequence I provide a few interesting examples to give a straight forward suck in of this method.Chapter 2 In this chapter I will explore the Binomial pricing model with European and American options. By presenting the formulas and equations I will study how to calculate the option price and explain some basic financial scathe. At t he main time I will also compare the results of the Binomial Tree model to the Black-Scholes model.Chapter 3 In this chapter I will demonst respect the Trinomial model with examples and large add up of figures by using the Matlab software. The European and American options will be compared with the Trinomial model.Chapter 4 In the last chapter in my dissertation I will spirit at how effectively the Trinomial tree model is improved based on the Binomial model. The Matlab code I wrote will help me process this comparison up to a jillion steps. This will be my thesis of this dissertation and this project.1.1 RiskMany of the valuation and guess management principles apply crossship canal all financial options. In this section, I will first curt introduce some basic concepts and features of put on the line management and financial derivatives, especially the option pricing problems.RiskUncertainty of the resultThe risks obtained and a persons unexpected earnings is the akin as b ringing loss or even damage to a person. In the financial market, risk is ubiquitous with asset risk (stock), bills risk ( alter rate) credit risk, and so on.There are two ways of facing the risks.Risk AvoidanceRisk-takingThe process of selecting enthronements with higher risk in order to profit from an anticipated price movement, is called speculation.Financial derivatives are types of risk management instruments whose payoff depends upon the behaviour of the implicit in(p) assets. The most common derivatives are forward edits, futures and options.Forward iron out A cash market effect in which delivery of the commodity is deferred until afterwards the contract has been made. Although the delivery is made in the future, the price is determinedon the initial trade date. The ships company agreeing to buy the fundamental asset in the future is called a long position, and the party agreeing to transmit the asset in the future is called a short position. The value of a forward po sition at maturity depends upon the human relationship between the delivery price (K) and the underlying price (ST) at that time. For a long position this payoff is fT = ST KFor a short position, it is fT = K STForward contract is normally traded over-the counter, OTC.Futures contracts are very similar to forward contracts, except they are not exchange-traded or the contract is alike(p), and thus does not have the interim partial payments due to marker to market. Before studying the Binomial Tree method, I will panorama at what options are.1.2OptionsAn option is a derivative financial instrument that gives the purchaser or holder the proficient, but not the obligation, to buy or distribute an underlying financial asset or commodity. The buyer of the option gains the right, but not the obligation, to engage in some specific transaction on the asset. An option which conveys the right to buy something is called a call option, and an option which has the right to sell is called a put option. The reference price at which the underlying whitethorn be traded is called the exercise price or necessitate price. some options have an expiration date. The process of activating an option is called exercise. If the option is not exercised by the expiration date, it becomes void and worthless. The options and related concepts can be assort into the following types1. Exchange-traded optionsExchange-traded options (also called listed options) are a class of exchange-traded derivatives. Exchange traded options have standardized contracts, and are settled through a clearing house with fulfillment guaranteed by the credit of the exchange. Since the contracts are standardized, accurate pricing models are much available. Exchange-traded options include45stock options, commodity options, bond options and other interest rate optionsstock market index options or, simply, index options andoptions on futures contractscallable diddlysquat/bear contract2. Over-the-counterOver-the-c ounter options (OTC options, also called dealer options) are traded between two private parties, and are not listed on an exchange. The terms of an OTC option are unrestricted and whitethorn be distributively tailored to meet any business need. In general, at least one of the counterparties to an OTC option is a well-capitalized institution. Option types commonly traded over the counter includeInterest rate optionsCurrency cross rate options, andOption on swaps or swaptions.3. Option stylesSome options with complex financial structures are called exotic options, and these includeBarrier option any option with the general characteristic that the underlying securitys price must pass a certain level or restriction before it can be exercised.Double barrier option-A double barrier option involves a utensil where if any of two limit prices is crossed by the underlying, the option either can be exercised or can no longer be exercised.Cumulative Parisian barrier option -A cumulative Pa risian barrier option involves a mechanism where if the total amount of time the underlying asset value has spent above or infra a limit price, the option can be exercised or can no longer be exercised.Standard Parisian barrier option-A standard Parisian barrier option involves a mechanism where if the maximum amount of time the underlying asset value has spent consecutively above or to a lower place a limit price, the option can be exercised or can no longer be exercised.Binary option-A binary option pays a fixed amount or nothing at all, depending on the price of the underlying instrument at maturity. An Asian option is an option where the payoff is not determined by the underlying price at maturity but by the average underlying price over some pre-set period of time.Bermudan option an option that may be exercised only on specified dates on or before expiration. For a cleaner view, I summarized various types of options in to a table belowstandard of classificationTypes of options Option buyers rightCall option and put optionExcises time of option buyers.European option and American optionintrinsic valueIn the money options, out of the money options and at the Money optionsTrading placeExchange-traded options and OTC options(Over-the-counter)Structures of optionsexotic options and vanilla options allowance account of option.Unsecured and secured optionsThere are two main reasons why investors would use options to reduce risk and togain more profit such as to speculate and to hedge. These will be discussed later. There are two main types of options, one is the European option the other is American option. The European option can only be exercised on the expiry date, while the American options may be exercised at any time before or on the expiry date.Assume k is the strike price T is the expiry date, and the payoffs VtVt = (St-K) + (call option)Vt= (K-St) + (put option)In this case, S is the spot price of the underlying asset. (t=T)Next, I will discuss the optio n pricing problems.Options are a type of bond derivative its price depends upon the movement of underlying assets. The change of price of underlying assets is random because it is a kind of risk asset. Once the price of underlying assets is affirm, then the option price can be confirmed too. This is saying that at the time the price of the underlying asset is St, the option price will be Vt and there exists function V(S, t) so that Vt= (St, t).At the expiry date, the value of option VT is the payoffs.VT = (ST-K) + (call option)VT= (K-ST) + (put option)The option pricing problem is to calculate V=V(S, t), (0,V(S, T) =Especially when t=0, and let the stock price is S0, what is the aid?p=V (S0, 0) =?Therefore, the option pricing problem is a work backward problem.1.3 Types of investors. Now, I will look at three types of people in the stock marketHedger An individual who enters into hedging trades. hedgerow is a way of reducing risk. Hedgers want to avoid exposure to indecent movemen ts in the price of an asset. For exampleA Chinese company take to pay a British supplier one million pounds after 90days.The company is facing the risk of fluctuation of exchange rate. If there is a big exchange-rate rise, this will affect its anticipated profit because of the extra cost. If the exchange rate is 12.5 yuan / pound. The company considers two Hedging plans in view of the probability that the exchange rate may rise.Plan 1. Buy a forward contract stated to use 12625000 Yuan to purchase one million pounds after 90days.Plan 2. Buy a call option contract stated to use 12500000 Yuan to purchase one million pounds after 90days and pay a 250000 Yuan premium (as 2%).I now list the two hedging strategies in the table belowSpot exchange rate(Yuan/pound)90dayslater exchange rate(Yuan/pound)Without hedgingForward contractPurchase call option contract12.5Increase to1313million Yuan12,625,000 Yuan12,750,000 YuanDecrease to1212million Yuan12,625,000 Yuan12,250,000yuanAccording to the statistics provided, it can be seen that there will be extra costs when the exchange rate rises if the company does not use any hedging strategies. The costs are fixed after90days if they choose the forward contract but they may degenerate the chance that if the exchange rate goes down, they will gain from unforeseen profit .Meanwhile the company will prevent extra costs (rise in exchange rate) and gain profits (decrease in exchange) if they choose to purchase the call options contract, but they have to pay the premium.Speculator An individual who is taking a position in the market.Usually the individual is betting that the price of an asset will go up or that the price of an asset will go down.Options like futures provide a form of leverage. For a given investing, the use of options magnifies the financial consequences. Good outcomes become very good, while bad outcomes may cause the whole initial investment being lost. For example, assume the stock price of X at 30th of April is 666. The stock price may go up in August, and there are two investment strategies that investors may take.Investors spend 666000 cash on 1000 shares of stocksInvestors purchase a call option contract which ends on 22nd of August strike price is 680, 1000shares, assume investors paid 39000 premium for that.We now analyze the investors investment return in two different situations. (Ignore the interest rate)Case 1.If the stock price rises up to 730 on 22nd August. For strategy A The investor sells stocks on 22nd August to get 730000 in cash.Return = (730000-666000)/666000=9.6%For strategy B The investor exercises his option and gets profitProfit=730000-680000=50000Return = (50000-39000)/39000Case 2.If the stock price drop to 660 instead of rise on 22nd August.Strategy ALoss =666000-660000=6000Return= (660000-666000)/666000Strategy B The investors profit is=0He will lose 39000, and the percentage loss is 100%.arbitrageur An individual engaging in arbitrage.Arbitrage A trading strategy that takes good of two or more securities being mispriced relative to each other.Arbitrage opportunities cannot last for long. As arbitrageurs interfere in the market, the forces of supply and demand will bring the market back to equilibrium. Therefore, in my project most of the arguments name financial derivatives such as option prices, and, forward contracts will be based on the assumption that no arbitrage opportunities exist.1.4 The Black Scholes Merton modelThere are seven important assumptions we use to derive the Black Scholes ModelIt assumes that percentage changes in the stock price in a short period of time are normally distributed. It is defined as expected return on stock per year and as volatility of the stock price per year. This assumption suggests returns on the underlying stock are normally distributed, which is reasonable for most assets that offer options. It is possible to buy and sell any amount of stock, this includes short selling. There are no legal proceed ing costs , taxes or other fees. The stock pays no dividends during the options life. There are no arbitrage opportunities.Markets are efficient and Security trading is continuous. The risk free interest rate is constant and known.(
